Let’s Talk Lymphedema…❓

A MyLymphomaTeam Member asked a question 💭

Has anyone experienced lymphedema either before chemo or during? What did you or your doctor do for it? Any at home tips?

🦵 I have had it in my left leg now for about a month and it’s progressively gotten worse. It’s painful to the touch and my mobility is severely limited. 🙁

Linda,

I have had great success with PT and the chemotherapy on my lymphedema. They wrapped it well for about a couple weeks and it’s responded so well. I can now walk! Praise God. It’s been amazing getting my mobility back. 😊 Thanks for all your comments and suggestions.

Virginia,

I am happy to report to you I called my doctor and got a referral put in to a physical therapy clinic that specializes in Lymphedema therapy and cancer rehabilitation. So, I am hoping to hear from them tomorrow or Tuesday and they can get me in quickly. I am very excited about getting some help with it. It’s just terrible isn’t it? Oh the pain sometimes! Thank you for replying and hope your chaos has calmed down. ☺️

Dearest Peggy. I am so sorry you are suffering with your leg so much. Yes if you have not done it, a consult with an occupational therapist or a lymphedema center should make a difference. They would give you a treatment plan with compression garments that are appropriate and would work with you on the pump use so you will be confident in doing it. Your cancer doc ought to respond to a request for a referral. I had to locate the facility by making a few phone calls to PT centers and asking if they do lymphedema treatment. It is not part of standard OT training. I am sorry to take a while to reply. I swept up in a bit of chaos at home. Good luck.
