Bone Marrow Aspiration & Biopsy
Any advice, tips, experiences ?
Thank you
Thank you
Elaine8,
Hi! I had a bone marrow biopsy. They layed me on my left side and removed the biopsy from my right hip. I had it when I was in the hospital while laying in bed. I held the nurses hand which helped. It wasn't bad at all for me. Just some pressure. Good luck on your test. Kelly
SO HAPPY TO HEAR OF YOUR RESULTS! GREAT NEWS INDEED! I think sadly one has to ASK to be “completely out” just like when you undergo a colonoscopy etc. Otherwise you are given “mild sedation”, where you can hear what’s going on but not feel it. I asked my oncologist to please ask for an anesthesiologist to be present, as I didn’t want to be awake at all. I have PTSD issues due to some difficult situations in the past, and I’m not comfortable being awake, period. The care team was so gracious! As I have a very bad back (degenerative spine situation) I asked if I could also be given a local to help with pain hours later. Unlike most people, at age 75 I was very sore for two weeks. A lot of people have a local, (right in the doctor’s office) and have even gone to work the next day. Bravo! Good for them. These younger folks amaze me. It depends upon your age and physical abilities for some of us. I’m so very grateful for my out patient hospital care team!
Thank you all. Sedation took care of the pain, but I was awake even though I didn't want to be awake. Report was good. Thankfully. Praising God for that good news !!
I can only speak from a caregiver standpoint, but my fiancée has had 2 bone marrow biopsies. The first one was done with a local anesthetic, the second one was done under sedation. He preferred the one done under sedation as there wasn’t as much pain and pressure (they knocked him completely out).
