Why Do Doctors Only Treat Follicular Lymphoma If It Has Only Spread To One Area?
I don't really understand why they don't try to treat when it is widespread. I haven't really found any reasoning for no treatment. It has been over a year since I was diagnosed. I do have other health issues and they just seem to be getting worse, I have COPD, conanary artery disease, I had a stent put in a few months ago and now I have to get a second mammogram and a scan because of the recent density of tissue. Does all this really matter if the cancer they don't treat just makes other issues… read more
I'm on watch and wait. I think the treatments are harsh and if you're not having any b symptoms the best is to hold off. It is incurable, so once treatment begins every treatment after gets harder. That's my understanding. It's a blessing to be able to put off treatment in my opinion. All your other issues may be exacerbated by treatment, especially anything with your heart. I hope that helps. I'm not a doctor, but I am a follicular lymphoma fighter.
My husband has Follicular NHL . He had 5 nodes in the mesentery. He was treated with 12 rounds of radiation. His radiation oncologist told us it’s very easily treated with great results he is in remission. He will have more scans in April and we are praying it stays that way. He is being treated at Mayo in Jacksonville.
I recommend asking your doctor some very specific and direct questions.
1. Ask that the MD to map out how and if your other medical conditions relate to your cancer. (As you suggest).
2. What are the MDs 'red flags' for deciding to start treatment.
3. Ask your question related to age. The body changes as we age so their might indeed be age related contraindications to starting treatment.
