My doctor ordered it and because I had two immediate family members and an uncle with cancer -the insurance paid for it.

I had genetic counseling
Speak to your oncologist ask them to put a order in for you.
The counselor will ask you about family history and they will do a blood draw. It takes about 3 weeks to get the results.
In my case I found out it wasn’t me it was something I was exposed to.

Regarding your genetics consult. Come armed with as much family history as possible.
Siblings,
parents
Grandparents
aunts/uncles
from both sides.
The geneticist wants tons of details beyond medical conditions as follows.
1.Birth date
2.Living or date /age deceased
3.Reason for death
4.Height
5.Race
6. Medical diagnosis'
If you can write down all of family history as described above then your initial visit with geneticist can formulate a more organized plan at your initial visit.
If you have family members that have similar medical background to yourself, bring in documentation to support those medical histories. Again this will save time and the blood tests that are ordered will stem from the information provided about your lineage.
