My NHL Is "indolent". My Haematologist Said I Will Need Chemo "down The Track" If I Remain Well, As I Am Now, Do I Need Chemo?
I am in a similar situation. I was diagnosed in November 2022 with Mantle Cell lymphoma. MCL usually requires immediate treatment, but in my case my oncologist thought it was indolent and I could delay treatment and be monitored every 3 months. The monitoring shows it is progressing, but slowly. My oncologist is highly trained and I trust her completely. She assured me that, in my case, there is no decrease in overall survival by delaying treatment. She also said it is highly likely that I will eventually need treatment, perhaps soon, but for now I should enjoy my life. My advice to you is to find an oncologist that you trust and follow their advice.
Many tnx, I hope you remain well.
I think the cancer cells can only be killed once by the chemo drugs (they evolve in a way that they become resistant) so your doctor is waiting until the cancer really needs to be treated. I think with certain cancers that have lots of treatment options like many lymphomas, the idea is to wait till it needs to be treated, enjoy remission, wait till it needs to be treated again, enjoy remission and so forth. But always ask your doctor why he or she does things, they should be able to explain things in a way that you can understand. I'm always asking my doctor lots of questions. I usually prepare a list to bring in with me. Good luck!
Many tnx
