My Mom Will Start The R-CHOP Treatment 6 Cycle For Large B Cell Lymphoma This Friday.
I was advised that the first session will have the worst side effects. What should we expect? And what can we prepare before the treatment? In term of nutrition and food during the treatment cycle, what should she have and shouldn't? Thank you so much.
I had to have plenty of fiber in my diet, to help move out all that stuff that was was suddenly backed up into my colon. You must drink so much liquids as to feel like you are too full. I walk around the lake paths too. Conversely this is also a time rest. Regular routines ought to be maintained as possible.
I think most people, myself included, had a forgiving 1st chemo session. It gets rougher in the next ones. She needs to keep hydrated, especially if she gets diarrhea, with Pediacare (GatorAde sucks). For at least a week or so, she should eat a very bland diet because the chemo trashes the digestive tract. I love fruit, but I had horrible gut trouble with fruit because it creates a problem for the good gut bugs and I got bloated big time. You can go from constipation to runny stuff real quick so its hard to know what to eat sometimes. During that time, avoid eggs, dairy, whole wheat, raw fruits and veggies. Try what docs call the BRAT diet: Banana, Rice, Apple sauce, and Toast (White). This is not a good diet to be on for more than a week, but it helps you get through the tough days until the tummy can enjoy normal foods again. One of the worst side effects is the fatigue. It's like the most tired you will ever feel. She should pace herself, not do too much at once. And she will most likely sleep a lot more. I'm sleeping for 10 to 12 hours!! This is normal.
Hi Thank you Becky6 I am having my first chemo on Monday and like you I am very nervous. Appreciate the feedback. How are your treatments now what side effects are you having?
Chap stick
Peppermint candies to help w the dry mouth, heart burn, upset stomach. Drink plenty of water during the infusion. Be prepared to be at the infusion center at least 8 hours.
Many ppl there brought food to snack on. I noticed several had peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. I myself found mac n cheese helped my stomach most after treatment.
They will give tylenol and plenty of nausea meds along w Benadryl before to make sure you have no issues. My first treatment I got very cold. They had me lay on a plastic heating pad and put another on top of me. Like a burrito. This helped
I was nervous of course. I had no idea what to expect. I just closed my eyes, took deep breaths and relaxed. The comfort was knowing my sister was there w me. It was a long day. My sister laughed at me many times after, we would be talking and All the sudden Id nod off and when i woke up I was able to pick up the convo right where we left off. π«£
Drink lots of fluid
Take the nausea meds even if theres no nausea. You want to be ahead of the nausea always. Lots of naps
Eat small frequent meals
Donβt be sedentary, get fresh air some sunshine daily if possible.
It does get better, its a process. I ate a lot of bananas and grapes.
